A fire door is typically an internal wooden door designed to provide an emergency escape route through a property and to help compartmentalise a fire, thereby preventing the spread of smoke and flames. These doors do not necessarily have to be fire-rated and are usually identified by a sign featuring a blue circle with white text. In contrast, a fire protection door must have a proven fire rating that is at least equal to the rest of the building's structure. This fire rating encompasses the entire door assembly, including the door frame, any glazing, intumescent fire and smoke seals, and all door furniture such as hinges, door closers, latches, and locks. In the United Kingdom, a fire-resisting door set should be subjected to either the British Standard Fire Test BS 476 Part 22: 1987 or the BS 1634-1: 2000 test.
