The Emergency Eye Wash Station includes two 500ml bottles of eye wash, two No.16 eye bandages, and a mirror, providing comprehensive support for treating eye injuries. All eye injuries are potentially serious, and the First Aid Regulations state the following: 3.40 Additional Items. If mains tap water is not readily available for eye irrigation, at least one litre of sterile water or sterile normal saline (0.9%) in sealed, disposable containers should be provided. Once the seal has been broken, containers should not be kept for re-use and must not be used beyond their expiry date.

The litre of sterile water is designed to sluice away any loose foreign bodies or chemicals in the eye, functioning solely as a mechanical action to wash them away. Buffered solutions are also available that neutralise acids and alkalis. The use of 20ml pods has increased in popularity in recent years due to their economical and practical size, especially for minor irritations like dust or grit in the eye. However, it is essential to note that these pods are often packaged in quantities of 25, equating to 500ml of water, but they should not be regarded as a substitute for emergency eyewash, such as a 500ml bottle.

A European Directive has been discussed that defines an emergency eyewash bottle as being a minimum of 400ml, although this is not yet law. This does not render the pods illegal; rather, they should be used as a convenience item for minor irritations or in conjunction with an Emergency Eye Wash Station.
